Preston Guild Scrolls

For the Guild in 2012 scrolls will be send to countries that have a special significance to our city now, such as Pakistan, India, and the Caribbean, where a significant number of our community have family and strong links, China, home for a large number of University of Central Lancashire students, and the Pacific Islands who already have sporting links with Preston and who will make Preston their home for their pre-Olympic training.

Preston Rotary Club, Guild Rotary Club and UCLan are our key partners in this project, using their international links to reach out across the globe.

As there are difficulties importing wooden items nowadays we are using three new emblems, replicas of the original wooden ones made at the School of Art, Design and Performance at UCLan using rapid prototyping. This process takes virtual designs from computer aided design and transforms them into thin, virtual, horizontal cross-sections and then creates successive layers until the model is complete so that the virtual model and the physical model are almost identical - amazing! A great example of blending the past with the present - a key feature of all Guilds.

Of course we now have the advantage of the internet, so to bring the journeys into the 21st century there is an online scroll to allow any friend of Preston, old or new, to send good will messages with text, photos or videos and linking in with GPS tracking of the physical scrolls.
